MS715 · Damage to Gears

Damage to gears experiment — vibration-based diagnosis of tooth faults

Experiments
  • Identification of gear damage from its vibration signature
  • Comparison of spur-toothed and helical gearing
  • Localisation of a faulty tooth within a gear pair
  • Influence of lubrication — oil vs. grease — on the vibration spectrum
  • Influence of centre distance and backlash (adjustable bearing plates)
  • Load-dependent behaviour using the MS705 brake & load unit
  • Interpretation of frequency spectra and use of the Sangari vibration analysis software
  • Works together with the MS700 base unit
MS715
Description
The MS715 is a small two-shaft gearbox designed for swapping gear sets mid-experiment. Two undamaged and two damaged gear sets are supplied — one spur-toothed and one helical pair of each — so that the spectral signature of tooth damage can be isolated by direct comparison. The transparent housing cover lets students watch the meshing while the instrumented cover (with sensor ports) is used for vibration runs.
